The Third Gallery Aya showcases three Japanese female photographers born before 1950.
Yamazawa Eiko (1899-1995) was active as a portraitist, commercial photographer, and institute head before taking abstract photos late in life. Here we exhibit late-career vintage prints.
Okanoue Toshiko (b. 1928) began making and showing collages in the 1950s, and has recently been enjoying reappraisal. Here we feature rarely seen collages and photos mainly from 1955.
Ishiuchi Miyako (b. 1947) is a globally esteemed photographer, known for Yokosuka Story and Apartment; body photograph series 1･9･4･7 and Scars; and portrayals of belongings Mother’s and ひろしま / hiroshima. We present Club & Court a set of final conclusion of her early taken in Yokosuka..
We have long focused on works by Japanese women photographers. It is our great pleasure here to exhibit stunning photographs and collages produced by three women artists and to highlight their quality and diversity. Women photographers, long marginalized, are now gaining recognition through major exhibitions partly thanks to the global rise of feminist movement. Today their works attract concerns of curators, researchers and collectors of the world. Our goal is not only to introduce, but also to historically position these artist’s achievements.

| 1926 | Went to America to study California School of Fine Arts and became an assistant to the photographer, Consuelo Kanaga. |
| 1929 | Returned to Japan. |
| 1931 | Established Yamazawa Studio at Dojima Building in Osaka. |
| 1935 | Yamazawa’s studio moved to Osaka Sogo Department Store. |
| 1938 | Yamazawa Eiko studio moved to Suo-cho in Osaka. |
| 1945 | Yamazawa’s Studio was burned down by heavy bombing in WWII. |
| 1946 | Worked for P.X.studio of Occupation Forces in Kyoto. |
| 1950 | Established the Yamazawa Institute of Photography in Osaka. |
| 1952 | Established the Yamazawa Studio of Commercial Photography at Osaka Sogo Department Store. |
| 1955 | Studied photography for six months in New York. |
| 1960 | Closed the Yamazawa Studio of Commercial Photography. |
| 1965 | Studied photography for six months in U.S.A and Europe. |
| 1995 | Dies. |
