Kodama Fusako

KODAMA Fusako is a prolific street photographer whose snapshot-style works compellingly capture the atmosphere of cities and people of particular eras. Kodama’s photographs from the 1970s and 1980s present objective images of the way we were at that time, when we believed quite naturally that those economic boom times would go on indefinitely. KODAMA has continued capturing street scenes in Tokyo to this day, in a way only possible with photography. She was born in 1945 in Wakayama Prefecture and studied photography under Yasuhiro Ishimoto at Kuwasawa Design School in Tokyo. Ishimoto was a photographer who had studied at the Chicago Institute of Design under Harry Callahan, so she was influenced by a distinctive East-West aesthetic that reinterpreted traditional Japanese culture through the lens of modernism. She received the Annual Award of the Photographic Society of Japan in 1993.
