The ThirdGallery Aya presents works by Ei-Q, Amano Ryuichi and IWAMIYA Takeji, exploring Japanese avant-garde photography of the 1950s. Linked by the Democrat Artists Association, founded in Osaka in 1951, the three advances experimental practices outside established art institutions. Ei-Q pioneered photo-dessin and made a mark on postwar discourse through both art and writing. Amano, of the Tanpei Photography Club, pursued photograms, while Iwamiya produced the Forms series and founded the influential Iwamiya Photos studio. At a time when Japanese photography was dominated by documentary approaches rejecting prewar modes, their work reveals contrasting avant-garde currents still little known internationally.
