Paris Photo 2024
Thursday, November 7-Sunday, November 10, 2024
The Third Gallery Aya and PGI will co-curate a booth in anticipation of the 2024 all-women anthology publication of Japanese Photographers by Aperture and exhibition at Arles. We will show a dozen women alongside a few other gendered photographers to offer new perspective on Japanese photography of multiple generations and genres. Our aim is fair representation across genders, and showcasing overlooked career turning points.
Yamazawa Eiko and Imai Hisae are juxtaposed with Tanno Akira and Kawada Kikuji , revealing internationalism and camaraderie among artists pre- WWII to early postwar. Ushioda Tokuko and Kodama Fusako, with shared roots in modernist Ishimoto Yasuhiro’s teachings continue their work since the 1970s (LE BAL will hold Ishimoto’s solo exhibition). Narahashi Asako collaborated with Ishiuchi Miyako from late 1990s to early 2000s, creating a zine free from male editorial influence. Nagashima Yurie advocates for a discourse focused on compassion and inclusion over labels and differences.
