Seen and Unseen -Tracing Photography

ISHIUCHI Miyako

Saturday, April 3–Sunday, July 25, 2021
Venue: OTANI MEMORIAL ART MUSEUM, NISHINOMIYA CITY

《ひろしま #131 donor:Masaki, S.》2020年

Ishiuchi Miyako: Seen and Unseen – Tracing Photography, a solo exhibition by Ishiuchi Miyako is held at Otani Memorial Art Museum, Nishinomiya City.
Over the years, Ishiuchi has consistently set out to express things unseen, such as the sense of touch, signs, memories, and time through photography by dealing with subjects such as landscapes, buildings, the body, and belongings. Having developed a unique worldview, Ishiuchi has been highly acclaimed for her work both in Japan and abroad.
In 2018, Ishiuchi shifted her base of operations from Yokohama to her hometown, Kiryu, Gunma Prefecture, and embarked on a new phase in her career. Confronting her own body of work, which has assumed a variety of meanings with the passage of time, Ishiuchi began to reconsider the documentary quality and other aspects of photography, and contemplate the future direction of the medium.
This exhibition includes vintage prints of Endless Night, one of the artist’s earliest works; ひろしま/hiroshima, an important series which depicts the belongings of atomic-bomb victims; and Frida by Ishiuchi and Frida Love and Pain, two series which focus on objects that belonged to the artist Frida Kahlo. In addition, we present a rarely exhibited series depicting roses and cactuses; Moving Away, which is being shown here for the first time in Japan; and a new work, The Drowned, which displays a new side of Ishiuchi’s photography.
