We are delighted to present Hiromi Kakimoto’s new series Star Boy: Night of the Flood. Kakimoto was inspired to create it after seeing photographs of her late father in an old family photo album. This led her to reflect on the relationship between photography and memory and the nature of media, while drawing on anecdotes she heard from her father during his lifetime.
Kakimoto debuted with Returning Memory, in which she explored her own past memories in the process of photographing her younger sister. In Little World she evoked an ideal world in the imaginations of young girls, and in her signature series The Time of the Cocoon she summoned images from the subconscious mind derived from girls’ memories and dreams. During residencies in Switzerland and Sweden, she became interested in the process of constructing new narratives from ambiguous memories, and went on to photographically reconstruct memories occupying an interzone between the real and the unreal and traditions that have been passed down through generations.
Kakimoto’s new series to be exhibited here is based on memories of an unprecedentedly personal nature, and is sure to reveal a new side of her unique vision.
