Statement
At times, banal moments and visuals from my daily life harbor a certain “presence” that conjures forth memories I had long forgotten. I hold up a light to these unearthed fragments, attempting to layer the sensations they bring on top of one another. Memories appear by virtue of my consciously recalling them; their shadows seem to exist only within a story that I tell myself, regardless of the fact that I remember them as they were.
In this series, I have attempted to portray the concept of “memories” as shadows, using a fairy tale narrative to tell stories from my childhood recollections. Different objects were arranged on multiple layers of transparent film. A light was then shined through these layers, creating stratums of shadows I could photograph and transfer to paper in my darkroom. The resulting collages incorporate a symbolic, cutout-like arrangement of photos, which include pictures taken by me personally in addition to family photos.
