The Third Gallery Aya presents the photographic works of Ei-Q at Art Basel in Basel 2024.
Born Sugita Hideo (1911-1960), Ei-Q made a memorable debut in 1936 with a group of photo-dessins titled “Reason of Sleep”, and went on to explore unique imagery in media including printmaking and oil painting.
Photo-dessins (usually known as photograms) are camera-less photographs in which objects, cut paper, etc. are placed on photo paper, exposed, developed and printed. Here we present his entire debut work Reason of Sleep – 10 works and a portfolio case and others – with the goal of comprehensively introducing Ei-Q’s photographic oeuvre.
