The Healing Camera – Phototherapy Project 1989-92

Jo Spence

Monday April 1,1996- Saturday April 27,1996
12:00–19:00 (The last day is 12:00–17:00, Sunday and Holiday are closed)

Jo Spence’s photographs of her body and her disease are not simply a private record of a cancer sufferer. They explicitly tell us that having breast cancer is a social experience.

The photos urge us to see highly social issues: how this society deals with a woman’s body, cultural Implications of the disease, and medical professionalism and authoritarianism.

Spence’s insightful social criticism and search for survival as a dignified person provide us with power.
